Sitting for the CAPM exam can feel overwhelming—not just because of the test itself, but because of all the logistics around exam day. Here’s a walkthrough of what my experience looked like, so you’ll know what to expect.
Before the Exam
Once your ID is checked, you’ll be asked to store all personal items in a locker. This means no reviewing notes last-minute once you’re in line, and your phone must be completely turned off.
There’s a small cabinet area outside the exam room where you can leave water bottles and a few essentials. I noticed some test-takers brought small snacks, hand cream, or tissues. Personally, I wish I had left my lip balm there—I couldn’t access it during the exam, not even on the 10-minute break, and dry lips became an annoying distraction.
Tip: If you rely on small comforts (like lip balm or allergy relief), drop them off in the cabinet area before you go in.
Check-In Process
A staff member will walk you through a clear process:
- Taking your photo
- Reviewing exam rules and answering questions
- Returning your ID and locker key
- Providing you with a whiteboard and marker (instead of pen and paper)
This was my first time using a whiteboard setup. It worked well, though I did miss having an eraser.
Inside the room, only these items are allowed:
- Your ID
- Locker key
- The whiteboard and marker provided
A staff member will guide you to your workstation and log you in. You’ll start with disclaimers and a short tutorial on the exam interface before the real test begins.
Tip: You can start the exam right away after the staff log you in.
During the Exam
The CAPM exam has 150 questions, divided into two parts. After question 75, you’ll get the option to take a 10-minute break. If you decline, the clock keeps running.
Here’s how it went for me:
- First half: I moved quickly, flagged 27 questions, but didn’t go back to them.
- Second half: I flagged 21 questions and did review them. I still had over 40 minutes left.
- Final time: Submitted with 18 minutes remaining.
After submission, the result appears instantly—if you pass, you’ll see a congratulatory message right away. A short optional survey follows.
After the Exam
A staff member will escort you out, hand you a printed summary of your result (not the official score report), and collect your whiteboard. Finally, you’ll return your locker key and retrieve your belongings.
✨ That’s the whole process and I hope it helps you feel prepared on your exam day!
