I wrote a separate post about why I’m doing this challenge, the specific French skills I want to work on, and how this fits into my current language goals. If you’re curious, you can read it here:
Textbook: Grammaire en dialogue A1
Day 2 is when I started to get back into the groove.
I studied for 1 hour and 29 minutes, broken into four short sessions, and completed Chapters 10 to 11.
At this point, I can feel my listening skills improving. I’m starting to clearly hear full sentences, which already feels like progress. That said, I still can’t fully understand an entire dialogue the first time I listen to it. And even after checking the written transcription and listening to it multiple times. Listening remains challenging, but it’s slowly getting better.
One major struggle right now is French possessives. The masculine, feminine, and plural forms are all jumbled up in my head. I’m running into a similar issue with some of the verbs I’ve covered so far, especially when it comes to plural pronoun conjugations. The endings still trip me up more often than I’d like.
After completing Review 3 (Chapters 8–11), I realized I might need to pause soon and focus on consolidation. That would mean:
- reviewing all the chapters I’ve completed so far,
- practicing verb conjugations more intentionally,
- reinforcing grammar concepts like possessives, and
- listening to the audio multiple times — possibly even adding dictation practice.
At the same time, there’s a strong part of me that just wants to keep moving forward. Completing new chapters feels motivating. There’s something satisfying about ticking items off my list and seeing visible progress.
So I decided on a compromise.
I’ll continue pushing forward until I reach Chapter 18 and the next review test (around 45% of the book). After that, I’ll slow down and do a more thorough review of everything I’ve learned so far — all the consolidation “shenanigans” included.
