Bonjour! Since deciding to learn French in 2024, I’ve collected quite a few beginner-friendly resources to support my studies. Today, I’m sharing everything I’ve purchased so far—along with the costs (in CAD, tax included).
April 2024 = $37.26
My very first purchase! Almost every beginner tip I came across emphasized pronunciation. That’s how I discovered Dylane Moreau, one of the first French teachers I followed online. I loved her teaching style, so when I saw she had a dedicated course on pronunciation, I bought it right away.
- The Complete Pronunciation Course
July 2024 = $99.21
After finishing the pronunciation course, I wanted to keep building. I decided to follow Dylane’s study guide plan and picked up four more of her courses.
- The Complete French Grammar Course
- The Complete French Conjugation Course
- French Conjugation Textbook – Passé Composé vs Imparfait
- French Conjugation Textbook – The French Subjunctive
October 2024 = 103.01

By this point, most of my resources were grammar-heavy, so I wanted something different. Dylane had just released new materials, and at the same time, I discovered another highly recommended beginner resource on YouTube: The French Experience 1, which someone used to prepare for DELF A1. I figured it was time to mix things up.
- French Short Stories Volume 1 = $10.25
- French Experience 1 textbook (amazon)= $11.68
- French experience 1 activity book (amazon) = $60.39
- French Workbook Bundle = $20.99
December 2024 =$68.07
An impulse buy! I was browsing Dylane’s website during a study break and thought: Why not complete the collection? I went for the affordable PDF versions.
- The Complete French Expressions & Idioms Course
- The Complete French Vocabulary Course
- French Short Stories Volume 2
- French Short Stories Volume 3
January 2025 = $156.44
New year, new resource. I stumbled upon Learn French With Alexa through YouTube and later saw one of her ads. I decided to try her course for three months—and it turned out to be one of my best decisions. The video-based format really clicked with me, and I noticed the most progress here.
- 3 months of Learn French With Alexa Course
July 2025 = $6.30

- Bescherelle Poche Conjugaison (amazon)
August 2025 = $180.01

By now, I had a solid grasp of beginner grammar and felt ready to practice more intensively. The Practice Makes Perfect series is often recommended, but I avoided it early on because it seemed overwhelming. I’m glad I waited—after learning the basics through Dylane and Alexa, the exercises felt manageable and practical.
And… another impulse purchase: I discovered that The French Experience has a second series. It’s definitely intermediate/advanced, so I won’t use it anytime soon—but I couldn’t resist adding it to my collection.
- French Verb Tenses + Complete Grammar Book by Practice Makes Perfect (amazon) =$53.45
- French Experience 2 (amazon) = $126.65
By Month Breakdown
- April 2024 – $37.26
- July 2024 – $99.21
- October 2024 – $103.01
- December 2024 – $68.07
- January 2025 – $156.44
- July 2025 = $6.30
- August 2025 – $180.01
Altogether, I’ve spent $650.30 on French learning resources between April 2024 and August 2025.
